HISTORY OF
|
|
After making the decision to end hospital rotations, Terry L. Poling, Terry D. Klein and Tom C. Klein were three doctors with free time on their hands. Almost 20 years later, the three are co-owners of one of the largest research facilities in the state of Kansas. With the absence of hospital rounds coupled with the experience gained from a few previously completed phase four research studies, the three decided to dedicate a little time to one or two studies a year. They chose a nurse that seemed to be particularly promising and trained her to become a Clinical Research Coordinator. The first study attempted was a very difficult study relating to sinusitis, but the doctors were not discouraged. Once this study was successfully completed a flu treatment study was begun. This study spurred the doctors’ excitement in research because with the improvement of the patients’ flu symptoms they saw the benefit to the participants of research. The next year the doctors completed five studies, with additional personnel and ten studies the following year. As time went along and more studies were performed, the doctors’ belief in the research process was reinforced. The patients in the family clinic truly seemed to enjoy and benefit from participation in clinical research. Patients found through research they had the ability to receive medical agents at no cost, which may not be otherwise available along with increased attention from their doctor and nurses. Additionally, the doctors realized the care they were able to offer their patients improved. Pharmaceutical research allowed the doctors access to the newest and most advanced agents and information, ensuring their family practice patients received the very best advice available. Over time, Heartland Research Associates, LLC has grown to encompass four sites, five owners and over 60 employees, but the core values remain the same: To provide high quality service to our patients
